1) Tom has been playing tennis since nine in the morning.

2) Tom has played tennis since nine in the morning.

The second sentence above is incorrect because the single action of playing tennis is in progress at the moment of speaking and it’s temporary. Is my understanding correct?

I wouldn't use a time marker with "has played". Also, I would probably say "Tom has been playing tennis since nine this morning."

Not necessarily- if he took up the sport today, then the second sentence is correct. Also, we often use the present perfect simple where the progressive could be used. Without any context, the first sentence is much more likely, but that doesn't make the second wrong.
