What are some synonyms for "get into his car"? What can I use instead of the underlined part?

Tom got into his car and drove to work.

He got behind the wheel [of his car] and drove to work.
He sat in his car and drove to work.

Tom got into his car and drove to work.
Tom hopped in his car and drove to work.

I'm not a native speaker of English but I heard of people say "hop in" the car. I wonder whether there are minute nuances in meanings. Let some native speakers shed some light on this.

"Got in" is a plain statement of fact.
"Hopped in" suggests a quick casual action. It could also suggest that the decision to go somewhere had just been made.

You could say "He hopped into his car and drove down the road to the store". Or "Tom was in a hurry. He waved at me and hopped into his car and drove away".
But you wouldn't be as likely to say "He hops into his car every day at 8 sharp to drive to work".
