Today’s Pakistan and Sir Sayyad’s vision
Sir Sayyad Ahmad Khan was the visionary educationist. His services in the field of education are unforgettable and matchless. His vision was of extraordinary approach. He envisaged the future of the Muslims when Muslims were under the sewage of great discrimination. Socially, the Muslims of India were not in a position to participate in any sector after the War of Independence (1857). This humiliation indulged the Muslims in great depression. Having this all post War of Independence scenario, Sir Sayyad’s struggle was to pull out the Muslims from confused and derogatory situation. Thus, he found education a tool to counter unwanted situation of that time. His vision was of the education oriented Muslim society. Unfortunately still Pakistanis lag behind inefficient and outdated educational system.
The modern age is the age of education, science and technology. Sir Sayyad's time was the time of lingual and scientific importance. Sir Sayyad strived to incline the Muslims towards scientific and Western styled education. Currently, Pakistan is so backward regarding scientific and technological advancement. Even for the cure of any major disease, Pakistani elites go to abroad for treatment. This dismal situation reveals the fact and figures of the scientific and technological standing of Pakistan among other nations of the world.
Sir Sayyad Ahmed’s most important stance was aloofness from politics. He wanted Muslims separate from politics until and unless they were fully educated. He visualized that Muslims were the minority as compared to the Hindus. Further, Muslims remained rulers of Hindustan. In this way, when Muslims were devoid of power, they were minority without western styled education. The new rule was in the hands of the westerners. Consequently, Muslims were unable for the competition of the Hindus. According to Sayyad, Muslims had the weapon of education and aloofness from politics to survive with respect and grace. It is said that democracy evolves where there is fully equipped education. In Pakistan today literacy rate is below average. It should be cleared that literacy rate does not guarantee of the betterment of education. Thus, education should be treated as the basis of life not only ability of reading and writing. Thus, Pakistan as a nation has been remained devoid of basic principles of democracy and politics. Elite segment of Pakistan abuse democracy and politics lavishly. Thus, without pragmatic educational system, Pakistanis are being abused whehemently since many decades. Sir Sayyad’s vision can be fit for today’s Pakistan in terms of Pakistan’s educational, political and democratic system. Here in Pakistan the focus is on political constituencies rather than futuristic educational policies.
Moreover, Pakistan needs a transparent movement to pull Pakistanis out of the evil political and democratic quagmire. Under the supremacy of the British, Congress was established in 1885. On the other hand, Sir Sayyad established Muhammadan Anglo Oriental College in 1875. The Hindus were educated. They were able to survive in government and public sector. The Muslims were less educated. Thus, they endeavored for their survival. Sir Sayyad gave them a sense of hope to be survived. Likewise, the patriot Pakistanis and reformist should be united in a sense that they, from different platforms, echo one voice for the betterment of education. This will be the last hope for the suppressed and downtrodden people of Pakistan.
In last, Pakistan suffers from inefficient educational policies, governance crisis, political upheavals, social stratification, and economic burdens. Hence a mechanism that was proposed by Sir Sayyad should be used again to give Pakistanis peace of mind and body
