Have I made any mistakes?

"Today, my mother is coming," Anna said to her husband George. "Please be kind and show some manners."
"Aren't I always kind when she is here?" George asked.
"No. Last time she called on us you asked her how many boyfriends she had. That's not your business. She took offence."
"I really don't know how we veered to that topic," he said. "We had been talking about all kinds of things and the question popped up in my mind without me thinking about it. Maybe I should go out to a pub and have some beer while she is here?"
"No. That would be worse. Just stay clear of certain subjects."
"OK. I'll imagine I am on a BBC show and must think of every word I say."

Try:

I'll imagine I'm on a BBC show and must carefully consider every word I say.

I would veer onto a topic.
