Can it mean that their mistakes were never apparent, that is, on display, but always hidden?

No, I don't think so. I've never encountered such an interpretation of "stuck". Perhaps it means that their mistakes (or the consequences of their mistakes) were not long-lasting, but I'm just guessing.
