"Making a leap", if it's used for a mental process, means making a choice, decision, commitment, etc. without any adequate logical justification to do so.
Person A: Everybody hates me!
Person B: Why do you say that?
Person A: Because no one's answered my question yet.
Person B: That's a bit of a leap, isn't it?
