Is it a good idea to liken hope to IV drip.

How well do these work? Would you say they are mushy?

Perhaps:

He was falling into despair. Then he thought about Sherry and how she was always there when he needed her, and his spirits picked up.

And:

I was running out of energy and ready to give up. Then I looked at my kids and thought about how much they needed me, and I kept going.

I think maybe just lifeline would be better than lifeline of hope.
