What does 'get down behind his eyes mean'?
 
It is neither an idiom nor a stock phrase, and I don't recall encountering it before. My guess is that Fitzgerald means the character appeared to lose interest in what his female interlocutor had been saying, and this was betrayed by the blankness of his gaze.
