This is a sentence from a published novel by Jack Bickham (sorry, I was unable to find out the title):

"Maniac," Davis muttered, cracking his front door to see who was playing destruction derby in the gravel parking area.

Is 'cracking' stylistically ok here?

I don't know what you mean by "stylistically." It's natural and makes sense. He opened the door just a crack so he wouldn't be noticed.
 
It's OK and understandable. I would expect "... cracking open his front door to see ..." but it's fine without "open".
 
Or opening his front door a crack.
