To blend the CVC sounds, which is the proper way ? ma + t = mat OR m + at

Hi!I am a new kindergarten teacher. To blend the sounds of the word MAT, which is the proper way? Is there any rule you know because I am making my own visual aid right now and I don't want to confuse my young learners.
1. ma + t = mat
2. m + at = mat

I recommend you use #2. That will help lead into rhyming words like cat, bat, hat, etc.
