Generally, I know the difference between this and that. But in this case, I'm not sure which to use. Let's say that a woman refers to her ex when speaking to someone else, but her ex also is in that room. How does she say it?

Let's stay away from this fool.

Let's stay away from that fool.
 
If her ex is in the same room, either one works.
 
Fools are fools, regardless of the distinctions about tiny variations in distances. Stay away.
