Which one is correct?

1- This summer we had the best holiday/holidays.
2- This summer we spent the best holiday/holidays.
 
My language experience tells me it's the first option ('had').

Perhaps:

We spent the summer in France. It was a great holiday. (In American English it would be "vacation".)
