These two sentences are made by me and I think they are both correct and have the same meaning. Am I right?

"him skiing" would be a focus on the person skiing.

Right, but I think this would be more likely to be used of a film/video than of a photo.

Not really, but if he had a distinctive style of skiing that ski fans would want to watch, his could be used.
