1. They sat up till midnight talking over their plans for their holiday. (The words in bold are used as the subject complement.)
2. They sat up till midnight, talking over their plans for their holiday. (The words in bold are used as an afterthought)
The above sentences are quoted from Ho's Complete English Grammar.
There is no comma in #1, but there is a comma in #2.

In #2, are the words in bold used as an adverbial?
