Please tell me which one is correct when I use both...and...?

  1. They have houses in both the country and the city.
  2. They have houses both in the country and in the city.

They are both correct. Obviously 1 is better since it is shorter.

I have a preference for 2 because it doesn't break up the place phrases in the city and in the country.
