Hi,

I was trying to help a fellow student with some creative writing and was unsure if a line was grammatically correct or not. It begins:

"Still, there was never such a sadder sound than the...."

'There was never such a sound' and 'there was never a sound sadder than...' are both obviously fine but I simply cannot tell if the original line works or not.

Any insight would be appreciated, thank you.

Yup!

But without seeing the rest of the sentence, it's hard to tell whether they sound natural. They might come across a bit amateurish / overwritten / overdramatic.

but I simply cannot tell if the original line works or not.

It doesn't.

Such a sad sound as

Don't use "such as" with a comparative or a superlative. Use it before a plain adjective.

It's such a good pizza. :tick:
It's such a better pizza. :cross:
It's such a best pizza. :cross:

A sound as/so sound as
