The worlds of science-fiction abound with wonders.

1)Why does the author use "world" instead of "world"?

2) Is the following has the same meaning as the sentence above?

The worlds of science-fiction are replete with wonders.

It's because sci-fi writers write about different worlds.

The world of science fiction = the genre/area of writing involved.
The worlds of science fiction = the different worlds/universes/planets etc that are created by sci-fi writers.

Note that "science fiction" is two words (no hyphen) but "sci-fi" is hyphenated. Don't ask me why!

[STRIKE]Is[/STRIKE] Does the following [STRIKE]has[/STRIKE] have the same meaning as the sentence above?

We hyphenate sci-fi because neither element is a real word. Compare hi-fi (high fidelity).
