the wood mound / the pile of timber

Hello. I don't quite understand the difference between the wood mound and the pile of timber in the context below.

I dumped the sticks and branches I had picked up onto the slab, and then led Pony to a tumbled maple about a dozen feet away.
When I returned to the little clearing, the old man was standing by the wood mound, poking at the pile of timber.
