I intend to describe a river during sunset. Owing to the reflection of the red light of sunset, the river has become red. Can I use "shimmer red" to describe this?

The river was shimmering red under the warm glow of the twilight.

Yes. Well, no. There's no sun at twilight. The red is gone. Change that to sunset or sundown and you're there.

twilight = dusk = gloaming = nightfall

(And I've never actually heard anyone use gloaming in conversation. Great word, though.)

I like gloaming. Thanks.

You might have to explain the word. It's rarely used.

My great-uncle used to sing this Scottish song as his party piece (I have no idea why; he wasn't Scottish!): Roamin' in the Gloamin'

(Good luck with the accent, everyone!)
