No, "on your senses" is not "in a sense."

You enter the subway and your eyes, your ears, your nose are all assaulted by the conditions. It's not an assault in some way of thinking about it ("in a sense") it is an assault on your senses.

In my opinion the sentece says that your senses (sight, hearing etc.) are 'attacked' (i.e. there are lots of things to perceive in the subway).
