Hello everyone,

This is an excerpt from a long text. Would you help me understand the structure of the underlined part of the sentence. Thanks a lot.

As a result the scientist and the artist :ire often considered to be almost diametrically opposed in their methods of operation, the artist basing his activities primarily on emotion tempered by reason and the scientist his on reason not tempered by anything.

It is nonsensical. Have you double checked the source to make sure it's quoted accurately? It looks like there is a word missing. I think it should be: the scientist bases his on reason.
 
It makes sense punctuated like this: "...the artist basing his activities primarily on emotion tempered by reason and the scientist, his, on reason; not tempered by anything."
