Have I made any mistakes?

The President wanted to throw the largest birthday party ever, but his wife was against. She told him that would not go down well with ordinary people who had to struggle to pay their bills. Besides, they would welcome dozens of fake friends who would stab him in the back on the first occasion.
"So what do you suggest we do?"
"Nothing special," she said. "I make you you a birthday cake, you blow out the candles, and we eat it alone. And the next day we'll read all the rubbish the newspapers have written about you, and we'll have a good laugh."

Not a teacher.

Take my advice with a pinch of salt, bud.

...was against it.

"on the first occasion" -> "at the first opportunity".

IMO, something like "they would have to welcome" or "it would involve welcoming" would be better than "they would welcome".

I think "President" should not be capitalized.

My suggestions.

It's unlikely, in my humble opinion, that ordinary folk would resent the president throwing a big birthday bash. (They are probably used to that sort of thing.) It's a good enough story anyhow.

You reckon the last "we'll" could be omitted?

Yes, if you delete the comma.

Tarheel,

Maybe in the US ordinary people would like to see the president throwing a big party, but in the countries which had been created after the breakup of Yugoslavia that would be looked at with contempt because ordinary people struggle to survive on their wages. At least, in socialism everyone had a job and a place to live, but nowadays it is a complete different situation. Nothing can be taken for granted when the corruption is prevalent in all parts of society. For example, on the island Vis, before the war there were 8 fish can factories, and now there is none. The similar situation is almost everywhere. This is one of the reasons that on the Balkans politicians are the butt of people's jokes.

I didn't know I had made a comment about the US. However, it is certainly true that Socialism creates a paradise on earth and has been an enormous success everywhere it has been tried.

How about the ordinary people?
