The musical comedy Oklahoma did much to expand the potential of the musical stage, and it encouraged others to attempt ....... .

1. original themes
2. to original themes
3. that were original themes
4. how original themes

Do we use "attempt + noun" ? If so, what does this part mean and what's the related structure?( Answer key: No.1)

Thanks

'Attempt' is followed by a noun (or adjective + noun as in the above) or an infinitive, so #1 is the only grammatical answer.

Yes, "attempt" is a transitive verb. It must take a direct object (noun or verbal [infinitive or gerund]). There was an intransitive use of "attempt" but it is considered obsolete.
