The meaning of "escaped losing one eye and becoming paralysed on the left side ..."?

Does "escaped losing one eye and becoming paralysed on the left side of his body" mean "(he) was lucky; (he) didn't lose any of his eyes and didn't become paralysed on the left side of his body"?

Context:

Ruy Monteiro, the hospital's head of neurosurgery, told the Globo TV network Leite escaped losing one eye and becoming paralysed on the left side of his body by just a few centimetres.

I understand this to mean that the patient luckily avoided losing an eye and being paralysed. He escaped (succeeded in avoiding) the injuries by a few centimetres.
