I guess (judging by dictionaries) there's no rank lower than a lecturer in British universities. Is that so?

The lowest rank of professor at an American university = Assistant Professor.
The lowest rank of "teacher" at a British university = :?: Lecturer?

There are positions under that of Lecturer in the UK- PhD students may work as Assistant or Junior Lecturers while studying. This sort of post is regarded as a pre-career grade for people interested in academic careers.

In the American system, there are levels below Assistant Professor, but they are not called "professor". There are, or example, instructors, lecturers, and senior lecturers.
