Hello.

Unlike rivers, seas, canals, and oceans the names of lakes are not used with the definite article, are they?
I have a thread about Lake Baikal. So I decided to start a new thread about it.

Not normally. There are a handful where the definite article is part of the proper name but too few to worry about.

Hm.

The Pontchartrain . . . .

That's about it for me.

I've only heard Lake Pontchartrain. The Great Salt Lake comes to mind. The Sea of Galilee is really a not-that-big lake.

I think I've heard it both ways. Won't swear to it, though.

The Great Salt Lake comes to mind.

Which reminds me: the Salton Sea. (A lake, not a sea.)

The Sea of Galilee is really a not-that-big lake.

Which is also called the Kinneret. (Not to be confused with the Knesset.)

Anyhow, I'm sure of that one.
Maybe people call them seas just so they can put a the in front. For some reason.
