"The" before church, prison, etc

Hello.

In an old English book I found a rule according to which the words "school", "college" "market", "hospital", "bed", "prison", "church," etc are not used with the definite article when they denote the aim they serve. I cannot find this rule in a modern book. Do you agree with it?
