Is it the phrase "The Alpha and Omega" singular or plural??

Example:

The Alpha and Omega of his plans is/are unknown.

Regardless of meaning, it's a compound subject joined by 'and', which requires a plural verb for agreement.

I don't think you can say regardless of meaning, because meaning is what it's all about. Gin and tonic is one of my favourite libations.
