Every time before our lesson, we are required to read something prescribed; in the lesson, the American tutor will say 'that is how I understood it(referring to the reading)'; if I want to use this sentence and express the meaning showing that I still understand it in this way, can I say 'that is how I understand it'?

If you wish.

Thank you very much.
