That diamond is one of world's largest jewels.

http://learnersdictionary.com/definition/jewel
-----------

a.
That diamond is one of world's largest jewels.
b. That diamond is one of the world's largest jewels.

Are both of them acceptable? What is the difference in meaning between them?

a. is not correct. That's an oversight by the editing team.

"Acceptable"? Both forms are used with possessive form of some nouns.

I meant, "Are both (a) and (b) acceptable?" (I.e., are these two sentences both right?) :)

But (b) is incorrect, isn't it? I am a little confused about your comment. Did you mean I used "acceptable" in a wrong way?

Yes. "(b)" is "incorrect", but you will see/read "world" particularly in that context without the possessive form.

a. is incorrect and b. is correct.

I'm not sure what you mean. That diamond is one of the world largest jewels is not possible. The possessive 's' is required.

Jutfrank, I am sorry and embarrassed about mistaking (b) for (a) in post #6.
I did see your post #2 and thank you for the help. I should have checked it again before replying in post #6.

Kadioguy, Yankee overlooked something. A is incorrect because a required definite article is missing. B fills in the missing article. It's correct.
