"Thank you for" + verb

Hello,
I've been hearing such things for a while.
"Thank you for tell me that!"

It sounds weird to me.
Why isn't it:
"Thank you for telling me that!" ?

I have heard many other things as well, all in combination with "Thank you for."

Whoever you've been hearing saying "Thank you for tell me that" is simply wrong.

Thank you for will always then take the verb+ing.
