Is this locution mostly British English or is it used in American English too? For example:

He took himself off to the dentist.

They took themselves off to the theatre/er.

They're fine in BrE.

But is it used in American English?

Let's wait for a speaker of AmE to tell us.

Many thanks Tdol and 5jj. I keep forgetting the time difference!

In my opinion this is not used in AmE.

If it's not used in AmE, then it won't be used with "theater".
