[Vocabulary] synonym for "laud" 1:- praise 2:-acknowledge ?

Dear sir ,I know it should be "praise" but at a place the right answer was acknowledge.However I know that acknowledge is also a synonym (however weak) so I want to know that is there any rule that we should write a far synonym instead of a direct meaning of the word or it is just that acknowledge is the wrong answer ?

Please be elaborate if acknowledge is the correct answer.

Dear sir ,It is in a previous year question paper preparation book related to an examination being held in India.
The objective type question had 4 answers and the answer was acknowledge. It may be a printing mistake but I want to discuss it with you people as for an instant I thought that synonym should be a word that is similar to the meaning and for praise being a direct meaning of laud should not be considered as synonym.

So I posted this question to confirm that is there anything that a synonym should be similar and not exactly same to the word being asked ?

There is no need to call anyone "Sir", here, particularly the women, one of whom you just addressed.

There is no doubt that "laud" includes acknowledgement, but "praise" is a much better definition.

It's not a problem, just a useful lesson in why we discourage salutations of any kind. There is no need to "Dear" anyone, and even less to use "Sir" or "Madam". We are all equals here. The only difference is that some of us are English learners and some are not.
