I would appreciate if you could take a look at the sentence below and drop a line to let me know if the sentence sounds right to you as a native speaker? Do you consider "out of breath" as a noun or an adjective in this sentence?

He was such out of breath, he couldn't speak at first.
 
The sentence should be, 'He was so out of breath .....'

'Out of breath,' behaves like an adjective.
