Struck by a curse

I am not sure if my sentence sounds natural. Is "struck by a curse" correct English. Is it possible to say "hit by a curse? Would you please correct my mistakes?

John suddenly lost all his money, as if struck by a curse.
 
I can accept "struck by a curse" but not "hit by a curse."
