Not quite sure of understanding "lay open" here.
It seems it is not coherent all the books are open when they are shaping a stack of them. A stack connotes a certain sense of order, arrangement. And books opened one on another building a pile don't seem able to keep an ordered stack. Hence my doubt of the image offered.
