What "sorry to keep you on hold" is meaning? I tried looking up the dictionary, but i haven't understood.

What does "Sorry to keep you on hold" [STRIKE]is meaning[/STRIKE] mean?

When your phone call is answered by a machine but no one can speak to you immediately, they put you 'on hold' — usually playing music for you to listen to while you wait. Later another recorded voice may say 'Sorry to keep you on hold, but all our agents are busy with other customers and your call will be answered as soon as possible'.
