[Grammar] something killing me.

Reading this paragraph, I didn't understand this sentence.

"Reserachers found subjects who were less active had shorter telomeres than those who were more active. The most active subjects had telomeres the same length as inactive individuals up to ten years younger."

I don't understnad why there are two nouns in a row without any conjunction.
I try another possibility that words "which are" are omitted btwn telomeres and the same length.

However, I still think that sentence looks weird...

I kinda think 'which are' cannot be omitted.

or any idea else to understand this?

It's fine without it, though if you want it I think which were would fit better.
