Hello.

Is it correct to say someone "sank" into sleep?

Does this work?

He was flopped down onto the bed and sank into a deep sleep.

Try:

He flopped down onto the bed and fell to sleep immediately.

He [STRIKE]was[/STRIKE] flopped down onto the bed and sank into a deep sleep.

With my correction above, yes, it's fine.

Of course, Tarheel's version is grammatically correct but "fell to sleep immediately" doesn't mean the same as "sank into a deep sleep".

With Ems' correction, it's good — a few words creating a clear image.

Language gives us the power to say things that aren't necessarily true. (I don't think that immediately after falling asleep you are in stage 4.)

There is nothing in post #1 to suggest that the deep sleep happened immediately. In fact, the word "sank" makes me think of a relatively slow descent.
