I am not sure if my sentence sounds natural. Would you please correct my mistakes?

Since many years, Peter's habit had been to wake up early in the morning, drink his coffee, smoke his first cigarette, and look out of the window at the empty street.
 
"Since many years" is incorrect. We use "For many years" or "Since + date or certain time-descriptive nouns".

For many years, Peter ...
Since 1985, Peter ...
Since childhood, Peter ...
