Since its invention, the car has been the preferred means of transportation for an obvious reason: it is very convenient.

1. Should I have used "cars" in place of "the car"?
2. Is the statement grammatical?

2. Yes.

My only question would be "preferred by whom?"
 
1. No.
2. Yes.

My only question would be "preferred by whom?"
For most people.

So, I guess saying "...the car has been the preferred means of transportation for most people for an..." is better.
