[Grammar] shined vs shone

Which is correct?
1. The sun shined brightly all day yesterday.
2. The sun shone brightly all day yesterday.

I believe #1 is more common in AmE.

Indeed, we would consider 'shined' to be unacceptable.

Mental aberration. I should have said that #1 is unacceptable in BrE.

I said "shined" is more common in AmE. An example from today's news:

The sun shined brightly on Denny Hamlin at Kansas Speedway.​
