She would yell at him for hours on end, wishing he would yell back, he would argue. But he would gaze into her eyes with dark inscrutable eyes, a vacant expression on his face. She knew. He had left her, he had left their family, their home, their city. He was somewhere else. But she didn't know where.
 
She would yell at him for hours on end, wishing he would yell back at her, wishing he would argue. But she got no response. She knew. He had left her. He had left their family, their home, their city. He was somewhere else. But she didn't know where.

If he wasn't there he didn't look at her at all.
 
OK. Perhaps:

He would look at her with a dark, inscrutable gaze, a vacant expression on his face. She knew she had lost him. He had (mentally) left her, their family, their home. He was somewhere else, but she didn't know where.
