Hi, the title phrase seems quite clear, it happens. That's why the boys' reaction really surprised me: why these "eyes wide in horror", what did they think Starnes was saying? Thank you.
"Mary and I got married in 1944... we got married and oh Lord we sure loved each other. Always did till the very end. She never liked me much, but she sure loved me, if you know what I’m saying.” Colin glanced at Hassan, who glanced back, his eyes wide in horror. They both feared they knew exactly what Starnes was saying." (Abundance of Katherines by John Green)

What do you think it means, since you find it quite clear?

It means, that she may did not be happy about his behaviour, but she still loved him with a love of passion, of desire.

Yes, I think that's close. The boys are thinking that she didn't like his personality, but she enjoyed sex with him. That is something that embarrasses boys.

It means, that she may [STRIKE]did[/STRIKE] not have been happy about his behaviour, but she still loved him with a love of passion, of desire.
See above.
