Suppose I want my 12-year old son to write something. He has a beautiful calligraphy, but sometimes he's too lazy to write, and the letters don't come out so beautiful. Can I tell my son (before he writes it): "Bobby, please, sharpen your handwriting"? Are the more common ways to say it?

It doesn't work very well. You might ask him to clean up his handwriting.

Say he has beautiful handwriting. There's no article. "Calligraphy" is artistic, crafted lettering, not everyday handwriting.
