In English, there are three structures of sentences: simple, compound, and complex. Is the compound complex sentence recognized as a grammatical sentence structure in a category of its own? Are there other basic sentence structures which I have neglected?

In English, there are three structures of sentences: simple, compound, and complex. Is the compound complex sentence recognized as a grammatical sentence structure in a category of its own? Are there other basic sentence structures which I have neglected?

Each sentence comprises one or more clauses. These clauses can be dependent or independent. Their richly varied combinations in a sentence classify into four different groups:

  1. simple sentence (= one independent clause)
  2. compound sentence (= two independent clauses)
  3. complex sentence (= one indep and one dep clauses)
  4. compound complex (= two indep and at least one dep clauses)
