A "school of linguistics" is simply the people who have invented, and who follow, a particular "theory of linguistics". For example, one linguistic school might be "Chomskian".

This applies to "a school" of anything - painting, philosophy, writing. In this meaning of ''school'', it means those who adhere to a particular theory.

Linguistic theory's can be theories based on specific languages but also how best to learn languages... How we learn languages today is far removed from how we learned languages say in the 1980's. Linguistic theories are also linked with how best people learn based on modern scientific discoveries of the human brain.
