What is the most appropriate variant?

Frescos and paintings depict [STRIKE]the[/STRIKE] scenes/stories from the life of space here ...

See above. Don't use the definite article there - that would suggest that they depict all the scenes or stories. You need no article to make it clear you're only talking about some of them. In my opinion, both "scenes" and "stories" work.
 
They do, but frescos are more like to depict scenes IMO.
