Hi, dear Englishologists. Could anybody explain what the underlined expression means?

"I dared not make the effort which was to satisfy me of my fate — and yet there was something at my heart which whispered me it was sure."
I guess it means "to reveal my destiny" or something like this. (http://poestories.com/read/premature)
