In India run to is used in its literal meaning as well as idiomatically (meaning; amount to, in the sense of "extend" but not “add” ) As:
This bus runs to the city centre. (literal)
The total will run to thousands of dollars. (Idiomatic)

The common expression for increasing or loosing fat are:
To become/reduce fat, To add/loose fat

In the UK, it's used to suggest getting fat through inaction and is not an uncommon phrase.

"She's a nice looking girl, but the women in that family tend to run to fat.

i.e. They tend to get fatter as they get older.
